           Deciduous

  • Has leaves instead of cones

           Coniferous

  • Have needles instead of leaves
  • Don’t lose needles in fall (except for Larch / Tamarack)
  • Have cones that contain seeds

 

3. What role do trees play in oxygen cycle?

  • Through the process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide, sunlight and water and produce oxygen and food in the form of sugars

 

4. What role do trees play in the nutrient cycle?

  • Nutrients in the soil are absorbed by the roots
  • Nutrients travel up the trunk to the leaves
  • Leaves fall to ground and eaten by animals and pooped out / leaves fall to ground and broken down by decomposers
  • Nutrients absorbed by roots and go back into the tree

 

5. What is the difference between trees and other plants?

            Plants

           Trees

  • Can live a long time
  • Easy to tell the age by counting tree rings
